Umoja Background
UmojaSwitch (Umoja) is a shared network of electronic payment and electronic fund transfer channels that interconnects banks together with other service providers. Umoja is a shared platform for banks and financial institutions which have a common goal of providing electronic payment services to their customers at a low cost. Umoja network is managed by UmojaSwitch Company Limited, a company which started as consortium in 2006 and later became a company in 2012. UmojaSwitch Co. Ltd. Is mainly owned by banks. Currently, there are 18 member banks while among them, 10 member banks are the shareholders.
Umoja has partnered with several international organizations to provide world standard services and products to its member banks and Tanzania population at large. For instance, UmojaSwitch is a country distributor and partner with Diebold Nixdorf, the largest ATM manufacturing Company in the world. Also, UmojaSwitch has partnered with UnionPay International for ATM card acquiring, the largest card scheme in the world with the largest ATM card base. Additionally, Umoja has partnered with Visa Inc. to provide Visa services such as Visa card issuance, ATM card acquiring on Umoja ATMs, merchant payments and Visa on Mobile (mVisa) services.
